Teamwork
My family really enjoys the Brady Brady series of children's books, centered around a young boy, Brady Brady, and his friends and teammates, the Icehogs. While each story has a hockey theme, the messages of friendship, family, loyalty, and sportsmanship are universal. In each book, through conflicts and dilemmas, triumphs and losses, the kids strengthen these values and most importantly, have a lot of fun. I don't like to jam a "moral of the story" down my kids' throats, but I think these highly relatable stories do get a message through. The books get a bit predictable as an adult reader, but it's a perfect balance for the kids. Reading level is about appropriate for 1st grade. My 3 year old finds it interesting enough to sit through (easily - he usually wants me to read another one) and my older son (now 9) still likes sharing them with his younger brothers too.
In "Brady Brady and the Runaway Goalie", the goalie, Chester, is so nervous to face the feared Dragoons that he runs and hides. His friends need to track him down and show him that they support him as they work together in the big game.
